Variety reviews Moana

Moana review

This musical tale of an empowered Polynesian princess marks a return to the heights of the Disney Renaissance, from the directors of ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin.’

The author notes that Moana is the Maori word for ocean. It is also the Hawaiian word for ocean. In Samoan, it’s vasa. In Tuvaluan, moana.

Aotearoa (New Zealand, home of the Maoris), Hawaii and Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are the three corners of Polynesia, covering more space on earth than any other nation. Of course, most of that is Planet Ocean.

there’s something to be celebrated in the way “Zootopia” advances the storytelling possibilities of animation, while “Moana” demonstrates how Disney has gotten its mojo back. As princess movies go, this one broadens the studio’s horizons, and as Moana herself sings in the film, “no one knows, how far it goes.”
