we know the way

Trying to learn the Polynesian lyrics so I can yell it loud on the water next summer from the kayak…

When you see a “g” in the middle of a word, it’s pronounced kind of “nnng”: tangyata, ka-ing-ya,

Tatou o tagata folau … vala’auina
E le atua o le sami tele e o mai
Ia ava’e le lu’itau e lelei           …(this line is a tongue twister for me!!!)

ooloo oooloo fahkah!

Aue, aue
Nuku i mua
Te manulele e tataki e
Aue, aue
te fenua, te malie,
Nae ko hakilia kaiga e.

We read the wind and the sky
When the sun is high
We sail the length of sea
On the ocean breeze
At night we name every star
We know where we are
We know who we are, who we are

away away
We set a course to find
A brand new island everywhere we roam,
away away
We keep our island in our mind
And when it’s time to find home,
We know the way.

away away
we are explorers reading every sign
we tell the stories of our elders
in the never ending chain
Aue, aue
te fenua, te malie,
Nae ko hakilia

We know the way

In this video, Opetaia Foa’i sings the last few lines…

away away

we’re not afraid of the horizon line

we know where we came from (I think)

we know the waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
