swordwhale’s nature moment

On Eastern Neck Island, at the end of the Chester River, on the Chesapeake Bay, I encountered something I’d seen on another island, Assateague (a barrier island off the coasts of Maryland and Virginia)…

tracks (previously, those of a fox, these appear to be raccoon)

and a crater

The crater contains what look like crushed ping pong balls.

Actually turtle eggs, or rather, the shells.

These, as on Assateague, would be diamondbacked terrapin eggs. The terrapin is a sports icon as well as the main ingredient in turtle soup.

I prefer mine alive… turtles at the DuPont Nature Center DE.

This is the only turtle that has beaten me in a swimming race… snorkelling at Assateague, I encountered one in the back bay. He took off, and I could not keep up, even in fins.
