One of the most appealing characters in the Iditarod is Joar Leifseth Ulsom.
He hails from Mo i Rana Norway near the arctic circle.
Probably some Viking ancestors, there. I’ve done Viking re-enactment and rowed/sailed several longships with The Longship Company of Oakley MD, so I have a large warm spot in my heart for things Viking.
Joar (sort of “yo-are”)… is the fastest rookie ever in the Iditarod, and one of two mushers to have placed in the top 7 four times in four starts.
Translate, he’s fast… or rather his team is, and he is great at managing them.
He’s also involved in a really cool non-profit educational outfit…
Team Racing Beringia.
Racing Beringia is an online education program for students in K-12 classrooms around the world to explore the region of Beringia spanning from the Yukon in Canada, across Alaska to Chukotka, Russia (RacingBeringia.com).
