horse color 101: whaddup Breyer and West?

The Johnny West classic horses, and Breyers, anything by Breyer, are fabulous examples of Art Done Right.

Breyers come in a variety of sizes, Johnny West’s horses came in one ginormous size with authentic tack.

Both understood horse anatomy and did gorgeous work.

Both companies have committed some horse color goobers though…

In both cases, the light bits are sort of “airbrushed” in, not with hard edges like the paint jobs on the models.

This nifty Arabian family by Breyer suffers from the syndrome many of their early vintage horses did: airbrushitis.

The face markings and stockings are white, with very sharp edges, a hard line on a real horse.
